Ports 1961 at Bloomingdales

On Thursday Bloomingdales and Vanity Fair Magazine hosted a fashion presentation of Ports 1961 Spring collection with designer Tia Cibani and fashion expert Ann Caruso.

The brief show was followed by a cocktail party during which guest enjoyed bubbly and treats by La Maison Du Chocolat. Attendees had a chance to examine the details of the tailored dresses worn by the models as they sauntered through the crowd. A DJ spinned entertaining tunes and Ports 1961 catalogs were passed around to the fashionable guests for review.

The Hotel on Rivington Teams Up With DC Shoes

I am loving boutique hotels collaborating with designers and artists to create limited edition pieces. It returns the much needed panache back to NYC. Albeit with a different fashionable approach, its reminiscent of the exclusivity of The Stork Club or high-tea at The Plaza.

DC Shoes has teamed up with the Hotel on Rivington in New York yet again for a limited edition of the DC LIFE Admiral Sport. Produced exclusively for the hotel staff, this is the fourth time DC has laced the staff with shoes from the DC LIFE Collection. The previous three models have been the Sector 7, Dress Sneaker, and the OG Admiral.

A luxury boutique hotel, the Hotel on Rivington collaborates with international cutting-edge designers to celebrate creative energy and create a venue from which the world can experience all of downtown Manhattan. The DC LIFE Admiral Sport for Hotel on Rivington compliments the staff’s Ted Baker London apparel, as well as the paintings created by Alexandra Richards in the restaurant, LEVANT east at Thor.

The Admiral Sport model has been customized with a combo of smooth black leather upper and black perforated leather. Across the white mid-sole is the laser etched “HOTEL ON RIVINGTON”, a design treatment that pays homage to the iconic side-wall bold DCSHOECOUSA lettering. A special red strap, a key color from the hotel, completes the custom shoe.

The Admiral Sport is part of the Spring 2010 DC LIFE Collection and available now at select DC LIFE retailers and through the DC online store.

Daniella Kallmeyer: Moda Operandi

You may remember her from The Fashion Show, a Project Runway-like reality series that aired on Bravo with hosts Issac Mizrahi and Kelly Rowland. While America voted for "cookie cutter" designer Anna McCraney, the judges panel (comprised of Mizrahi, Rowland, and Senior Vice President of IMG Fashion, Fern Mallis) voted for Daniella Kallmeyer, bestowing upon her the award for Designer's Choice, for her exquisitely executed garments. Since then, industry forecasters have concurred that her work is nothing short of extraordinary.

Daniella was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, grew up in Maryland, and later attended the prestigious London College of Fashion. Once in London, she learned how to push the envelope on her own designs. In a recent phone interview she revealed that London designers Les Chiffoniers and the late, great Alexander McQueen "helped me to build a stronger sense of ambition and reconfirmed my love of the industry."

The hard work paid off. Daniella's graduate collection became one of just 27 selected by a panel of industry professionals (including celebrity designer Giles Deacon), to be featured during an exclusive press show at London's Royal Academy. Following that exposure, designer Henry Holland and buyers of ASOS.com (As Seen On Stars), chose Daniella's collection to be sold in an exclusive limited-edition live sale (the inventory sold out). Shortly thereafter, Vogue.com mentioned Daniella as "One to Watch" - and she is indeed.

Moving across the pond to launch her post-grad career in New York, Daniella began working with Proenza Schouler and Sari Gueron. Now, she has begun to deliver on her own. It was evident to those of us who attended her NYFW Fall '10 runway collection, that she has staying power beyond her television accolades. In her Fall line, she has incorporated luxe leathers, fluid silks and beautiful knits, in an array of romantic colors. I loved each piece and was extremely impressed that she even designed her own jewelry to accessorize the models.

For now, Daniella's line is commissioned on a per request basis. However, I'm certain we'll be seeing her elegant collections in high-end boutiques and department stores in the very near future.

Fashionable Fridays with Cleverly Clothed: Moda Operandi

Its 7pm on a Friday and a fashionable crowd shuffles into New York's East Village hot spot, Ella for a Fashionable Friday with Cleverly Clothed. With its old Hollywood aesthetic, the lounge captures the glamour and decadence of a 20's jazz club. The Tori Amos-like singer /songwriter named Jersey, serenaded us as we sipped our fresh watermelon martinis and mingled with fashion industry insiders.

I introduced myself to hosts Poull Brien and J.D. Elquist and instantly could tell that the night was going to be a blast. Poull is a noteworthy event planner, known for throwing fabulous industry fetes, while J.D. designs bespoke menswear that has the potential to give Jay Kos a run for his money. Tonight's bash is being co-hosted with renowned fashion photographer Derek Reed and Daisy Mae P.R.'s Alisa Rottenberg. All the hosts worked the crowd, ensuring that their that guests were thoroughly enjoying themselves... and indeed we were.

Belly laughs and business cards were exchanged throughout the evening and all the while, the cocktails kept coming (my kind of night!). Most of the male guests were decked in stylish garb, a few even sporting fedoras. In theory, they probably could have given some of the female attendees a style tip or two.

All in all, the night was a hit and the crowd's energy was fantastic, definitely the perfect mixer to kick-off the weekend.

Fan-tab-u-lous Fall '10 Faves: Moda Operandi

So now that Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is over and my life is somewhat back to Normal, I wanted to recap on some of my Favorites for Fall.

The passion that the clothing exuded for Autumn was nothing short of awe inspiring. The models, covered in rich colors, opulent textures and dramatic lines, seemed to just rove down the runway... leaving attendees speechless.

Designers once again embraced a multitude of leathers, furs and shearlings pairing them with extravagant knits. Actually, I was surprised not to see any PETA demonstrators picketing in front of Bryant this year.

Although I may not have bumped into protesters at the tents, I did rub elbows with: Matt Dillion, Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, Michelle Trachtenberg, Whitney Port, Carmen Electra, Kate Bosworth, Whoopie Goldberg, Amanda Peat, Rosario Dawson, Kerry Washington, Hayden Panettiere, Ed Westwick, Molly Sims, Liv Tyler, Kelly Osbourne (who, btw, lost an insane amount of weight and looks fanfrickingtastic! I saw her at Nanette Lepore, and don't think that I didn't tell her how awesome she looks.) Um..... Oh, I also bumped in to Sarah Jessica Parker at Halston and introduced myself as the original Samantha Jones.

So Long Bryant Park… Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Review Fall 2010

The fine farewell to a central locale boasted new trends for Fall 2010 and a consistent theme of a hopeful look to the future.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for Fall 2010 sponsored 81 official fashion shows over the course of 8 days, 12 being off-site. This does not include the numerous super-ingenious independent designer shows that concurrently take place. Though collectively, one thing is for sure: Fashion is back and style is the new black.

Now, as New Yorkers, we are somewhat on the cutting-edge of the Fashion World, therefore some of the trends this season we've seen before, yet, some we have not.

Trends for Fall: Military, 1920-30's aviator pants and bomber jackets, visible layering, structured shoulders (a slimmer version of the 80's shoulder pad), jeweled embellishments, belting to expose layers, a-symmetry, intricate back details, and ruffle details.

Textiles: Unique blended fabrics, lace, mesh, chunky knits, shimmery metallics, hounds-tooth (my fave), plaid, color textured stockings, shimmery stockings, and patch-working chunky materials with delicate fabrics.

Accessories: Fitted thigh-high boots and stockings (often layered), leather bomber caps, chunky knit scarves, geometric gold or silver rings, bracelets and necklaces, and while most designers paired their collection with various length leather gloves, I became partial to the tight forearm cuff in metallics and army printed mesh.

Conclusion: So long Bryant Park... so long fashion drought... so long decade with no name... Bienvenue MBFW at Lincoln Center...

Wednesday, February 17th: c. marchuska Fall 2010 Runway Show.

c. marchuska presented it's latest eco-fabulous fashion collection this past Wednesday as part of The Green Shows - Eco Fashion Week, during New York Fashion Week.

The sustainable line is a 25 piece collection including jackets, leggings, skirts, tops, shorts, dresses and skirts. "We added in wovens and texture with hemp silk, organic cotton twill, organic cotton gauze and soy jersey. The inspiration is East Coast rocker chic…" explains Christine Marchuska, CEO and Founder of c. marchuska.

This fun, comfy and conscious collection breathes a fresh approach to Green Fashion with its flirty and hip pieces. A little bit hipster and a little Debbie Harry. The collection ranges from everyday cool to sophisticated silk dresses and fitted jackets.

Conclusion: Finally! Bye-bye Crocs, Birkenstocks, atrocious patterned hemp frocks and Hello c. marchuska eco-luxe apparel.
