HEAT
Ellen's Run, HEAT, Steven Klein, and Lindsay Lohan: It's A Family Affair
+
Saturday Night in the Hamptons is always a sure bet for fun, glamour, and drama. We certainly got all three.
The elegant evening began at Steven Klein's gorgeous estate at West Kill Farm for HEAT, a celebration for the new Ellen Hermanson Breast Center Southampton Hospital. The benefit also honored the memory of Annie Toglia.
All the guests donned the theme colors, black, white, and pink, drank Liv Vodka cocktails and local estate wines, while dancing to Dj Donna D'Cruz's beats. After a warm speech by Julie Ratner, Ellen's sister- who graciously and tirelessly and remains committed to Ellen's Run, the one live auction item was up for bid. An opportunity for two guests to enjoy a day on the set of Sex and The City 2 with Kim Cattrall.
As one gentleman was up to $18,000, Ms. Cattrall took auctioneer Patrick Tully's mic and proposed, "If you bid really high, I may just take you to lunch."
The gavel dropped with a $20,000 donation to the Foundation, the gentleman out bid himself from $16,000 - $20,000, and all were delighted. Until later, Mr. Tully revealed that a caller vowed to double the standing offer, and promptly gave his Black Amex number... $40,000.
However, the excitement did not stop there. The crowd slowly dissipated, until a rush of lights began firing, as Ms. Lindsay Lohan entered the tent with dates Adam from MTV's The City, her Brother Michael, and a small crew, headed to the bar. She appeared quite happy, until she made a bee-line to the far corner of tent...
Enter Michael Lohan. Ms. LiLo quickly turned snitty. Who could blame her? Was he stalking her? The whole country knows she doesn't want to talk to him. Did he think she would welcome him with open arms if he followed her to an exclusive event?
Her friends surrounded her, as she sat with her back to the crowd, but Michael sauntered up in his signature camel-ball jeans and knelt down to confront his Daughter. About what, we do not know. All we overheard was, "I didn't, Dad. I didn't."
Little Bro swooped in to relieve the tension, whilst Lindsay got up and headed back to the bar, rightfully in a tizzy, definitely not wanting to be photographed; just wanting to be left alone.
We caught up later with Lindsay at Pink Elephant, sans Papa Lohan. She appeared to be somewhat more relaxed, even introducing herself to yours truly. While the thin blond starlet caught a few smokes, I did not see her drinking any booze.
Conclusion: Hey, Michael Lohan! Back off. Not only did you piss off your Daughter, but you also pissed the guests off. A pleasant night honoring two wonderfully courageous and inspirational woman, as well as the many many women that face the challenges of breast cancer, ended in the remaining guests gossipping about Linsday.

Favorites from Miami Swim Fashion Week
+Yes, there are luxe images and media whispers of fall preview collections alerting us of the next must-haves for the upcoming season. Now, I am all about fashion forecasting and knowing the "it" items ahead of time, but dare I say I'd like to stay a little autumnally aloof? Afterall, summer is here in full force! (hello heat waves!) To celebrate the success of Mercedes-Benz Swim Fashion Week in Miami, below are my top 3 splashy favorites straight off the runway.

How unabashedly summer is this Tyler Rose bikini (pictured above?) A flirty ruffled fuscia top paired with a rainbow splashed low cut bikini brief is candyland chic. This look embodies everything summer should be: playful, exciting, and indulgent.

Crystil Jin's take on the one-piece is sexy sophistication done well...really well. The color palette is both eye catching and understated at the same time. Two tone rich copper hues and plunging deep V adds visual interest–playfully highlighting sunkissed skin.

Kaftans can be a quick way to look pulled together post swim or beach lay out. When choosing a coverup I tend to look for versatility: something relaxed enough to wear lounging during the day but also appropriate for social happenings throughout the evening. Cia Maritima's piece from his collection does just that. This beautifully designed tribal inspired kaftan is oh so delectable. Such an eye catcher–strong in aesthetic yet soft and ethereal in form.

Julie Feldman: The Princess of Pocketbooks
+
A few weeks ago, I had the fortunate pleasure of meeting the fantastic Julie Feldman of Julie Feldman Designs. I was in Southampton with my friend, Stephanie Newhouse, who was there representing Self Magazine, one of the sponsors for Ellen's Run. The day before the run for Breast Cancer, Stephanie insisted that I meet Ms. Felman to take a look at her fabulous bag collection.
Immediately, Ms. Feldman graciously offered a purse of our choice, to model at that evening's Gala event: HEAT at Steven Klein's Estate. Let me tell you, it was difficult to choose just one. Ms. Feldman's handbags are custom-made from florals, satins, silks, leathers and exotic fabrics and trims. Having been featured on Fox News, CoolDesignerHandbags.com, in Accessories Magazine, Couture Magazine, the New York Post, the Santa Monica Star, and the Las Vegas Review Journal, among others, I now knew why. Divine.
A Chicago native, Ms. Feldman left the Windy City for Los Angeles bringing with her a passion for art and design. As an artist, her work usually took form in welded steel sculptures and oil paintings. Several years ago, after an art showing of her welded copper roses, Ms. Feldman was awed by the beauty and innocence of tiny, colorful, fabric roses. She began adorning satin evening bags with hundreds of brilliantly colored silk ribbon baby roses in "pavé-style". This was the birth of her Signature Baby Rose Collection.
What's even more fabulous then the pocketbooks themselves, Ms. Feldman created Handbags for Humanity® to honor and assist the great work of certain charities and foundations. "Over the years," Julie says, "I have felt extraordinarily lucky to be involved with organizations, and more profoundly the people behind them, that make a huge difference in people's lives. I count myself privileged to be able to give something back."
Whenever a handbag or accessory is purchased through the website that is accompanied by a handbag icon, Julie Feldman Designs donates a portion of that sale to one of the organization's profiled on the page; Ellen's Run, Center Theatre Group, Long Beach Women's Cancer League, and Planned Parenthood Los Angeles.
Um, hello? How much do you already love her?!
If you haven't already, check out the website HERE, and get one of your own custom-made designs that have been adorned on some of Hollywood's A-list celebs.

Ellen's Run 2009: Knowledge, Wisdom, and Insight with Julie Ratner
+
The morning after the much talked about HEAT benefit celebration for the new Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Southampton Hospital at photographer Steven Klein's estate, supporters and survivors gathered for the 14th Annual Ellen's Run. The 5K race/walk, is a family event to benefit breast cancer patient support services.
Over 1100 runners participated in the race, which began at Parrish Hall at Southampton Hospital, and over 48 breast cancer survivors crossed the finish line. Each year, survivors receive a pink bandanna upon registration, and handed a pink rose, donated this year by local florist- Dutch Petals, when they cross the finish line. "They are the heroes," remarked Julie Ratner, Ellen Hermanson's sister and chair of The Ellen Hermanson Foundation, upon sharing the event details with me,
adding, "I think we are all really here to have a good time. I like to think of it as a giant family raising money for support services."
Ms. Ratner informed me that it was the first time Ellen's Run had taken place in Southampton, and she couldn't have been more pleased. "Incredible... it was a beautiful race course and a perfect day."
Ellen Hermanson, who lost her battle to the disease April 11, 1995 at the age of 42, cared about educational outreach, psychosocial support, and pain management. Ms. Ratner said that one of the most prudent things her sister told her was, "People in my position, don't have time to have their days compromised by pain."
Thus, in honor of her courage and voice, The Ellen Hermanson Foundation is unique in its commitment to helping breast cancer patients and their families cope with the changing nature of the physical and emotional aspects of breast cancer.
In two weeks, Ellen's daughter, Leora, will be turning 21 (she was 6 yrs old when Ellen passed). Leora, which translates to "my light" in Hebrew, is a psychology major senior at Wesleyan. "She is our light, " Ms. Ratner stated, "she is a fabulous young woman. Amazing, beautiful, and smart... she was always the kindest kid too. If anyone was ever left out, she would bring that person in, even if they weren't cool. She's always had a tremendous empathy, patience and wisdom that far exceeded her years. Her mother always made her come first."
Ms. Ratner went on to tell me that even when Ellen was in the hospital, she always made sure Leora knew the "drill for the day", so she would never have any anxiety about who was going to pick her up from school, who was going to take care of her. "I think that is a gift she inherited from my sister. Knowledge, wisdom, and insight. What takes most of us, including myself, a long time to learn."
I believe Ms. Ratner has given us all a gift by bringing Ellen's vision and determination to address an aspect of breast cancer, that doesn't get as much attention or funding as research, to the forefront of treatment approach.
Through Julie Ratner's devotion and dedication, The Ellen Hermanson Foundation has helped so many families and has touched so many lives with love, respect, and understanding.
Sponsors: Self Magazine, Bloomberg, ISA Advertising, Entemman's, Bridgehampton National Bank, Liv Vodka, Panera Bread, Sotheby's, Southampton Inn, Sparkling Pointe, Modell's, Ocean Printing, WBAZ, and WEHM.

Hamptons Weekend Guide
+
100 degree weather can be quite the patience tester. The static summer heat trapped by buildings and concrete can get a little claustrophobic. Slowly but surely the desire to leave the city turns from a gentle "i'd like to get out" to a "i have to get out..now". Nothing against city living, but a little separation is a good thing, healthy even. Gives us a chance to miss something and in turn appreciate it even more. So, bid the city adieu (for a weekend) and enjoy some much needed R & R in the Hamptons. Below is a quick glance of things to do and enjoy.

Shopping:
Jennifer Miller Boutique (check out the goods pictured right) does not skimp on the glam factor. With a beautiful collection of exclusive fine jewelry as well as economical friendly gems, it is no wonder that Jennifer Miller has collaborated with some of the most well respected designers in the world. Featured in publications such as W, Vogue, People Style Watch, and Real Simple magazines to name a few, Jennifer Miller's eclectic mix of alluring pieces definitely has something for everyone. Stop by and take a gander. Jennifer Miller. 28 Jobs Lane. Southhampton NY. (T) 631-283-9061.
Biba Boutique is a one stop shopping oasis to help stock up on all this season's summer essentials. Katy Perry, Paris Hilton, and Real Housewives of New York chickies Kelly Killoren Bensimon and Jill Zarin are fans. Biba Boutique. 40 Hill Southhampton NY. (T) 631-259-2762.
Blue & Cream is a popular men and women's clothing store that has developed quite the dedicated following. The clothing racks are stocked with an impressive collection of designers–Phillip Lim, Cynthia Vincent, Rag & Bone, Vena Cava, Halston Heritage, and Alexander Wang is just a tid bit of the goodies that Blue & Cream provide. Whether you need something for daytime fun or a night out on the scene, you can find either or both at this Hamptons favorite. Blue & Creame. 60 On the Circle. East Hampton NY. (T) 631-329-1392.
Eating:

Philippe Chow (pictured above) is a New York favorite. So when the famous chinese eatery opened last summer in East Hampton, many were pleased as punch. For an incredible feast, slither into one of their sleek red booths and order up something good. Singer Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson have been spotted getting their chow on. Philippe Chow. 44 Three Mile Harbor Rd. East Hampton NY. (T) 631-907-0250.
Popular French Bistro Pierre's specializes in serving up local seafood to summer vacationers. Modeled after a bistro one might come across in St. Barth's, this restaurant favorite is both cozy and intimate. Pierre's. 2468 Main Street. Bridgehampton NY. (T) 631-537-5110.
For delicious Japanese food, look no further than Sen. Touted as one of the best sushi and sashimi places on the East End, you'll find a delectable menu of fresh fish and an alluring cocktail list. Kelly Ripa and husband Mark Consuelos have even stopped by for a nosh. Sen. 23 Main Street. Sag Harbor NY. (T) 631-725-1774.

Beaches:
Main Beach (pictured) in East Hampton is a truly a sight to be seen. Impeccably clean white sandy beaches await those who are patient enough to deal with the parking situation. If possible, I suggest getting dropped off to avoid any unforeseen headaches. Once you make it to the beach, a sandy sanctuary awaits. Truly a summer relaxation spot worth going to. Main Beach. Ocean Ave. East Hampton NY. (T) 631-324-4150.
Coopers Beach in Southhampton is another stunner with gorgeous views of the Atlantic and miles of sandy beach and water. Highly regarded as one of the top ten beaches in the United States, historical mansions and other architectural delights are viewable from the beach. There are pavilions for snacks and restroom/shower facilities available for use. Warning, this is yet another potential parking headache. So to avoid paying to park, or lack of space, if possible, ride a bike from town or hitch a ride from a friend for easier access. Coopers Beach. 268 Meadow Ln. (T) 631-283-0247

Oxford Flats: Comfy and Chic
+
Oh the Oxford shoe. Haven't we all noticed them fluttering about in an array of colors and styles? They have beguiled me since last fall and only now have I made a gentle foray into this menswear inspired trend for summer. The key to this look is to counterbalance the boyish feel of the brogue shoe with feminine silhouettes and girlish details.
Kimchi Blue Swiss Dot Oxford $38.00 by Kimchi & Blue at Urban Outfitters
As the city heat waves roll on, one may not immediately look to a closed toe "dress shoe" for traipsing about town. Have no fear, my dears, there are options that allow you to indulge in this trend without feeling the heat on your feet. For a fun take on the classic oxford, I am all for the advantageous approach to cut-out styles. They not only provide visual interest in design but also comfort and breathability for one's footsies. Kimchi's 'Blue Swiss Dot' Oxford in taupe is absolutely adorable. With a simple front cutout and stitched dot detailing, this playful shoe allows for versatility in style of dress: jeans, skirt, shorts, sundress– the options are endless with this softer take on the traditional oxford.
Lewis Oxford $228.00 by Oxford at Free People
The quirky cute look of these Free People Lewis Oxfords are right up my alley. The two tone shoe with perforated details and classic wingtip has the perfect schoolboy/dandy look that I'd love to get my hands on. This pair would also easily transition quite nicely into fall. All the more reason to keep these on my radar. Unlike the Kimchi flats, these are much more masculine in style, so just keep in mind to keep other menswear inspired pieces to a minimum– unless of course you are going for the Annie Hall look.

TOMS 'Aira' Sneaker (Women) $78.95 by Toms at Nordstrom
These Toms Aira sneakers have the perfect boy meets girl appeal that will no doubt feel so so comfortable. I recently ordered myself a pair because I could not resist it's resemblance to my new favorite look. Also, purchasing a Toms shoe links me to their One for One campaign–for every shoe purchased, Toms will give a new pair to a child in need. This shoe can be worn with or without laces. I am partial to without. Not only because I prefer the look of the shoe sans laces but also because it requires less work on my part. Slip on. Slip off. A simple formula really. I have a feeling this pair of tennies just may be my new favorite.
side-note: items pictured are brown in hue (taupe, cognac, chocolate brown); this is due to my preference of color choice as I am new to the oxford flat phenomenon. There are of course many a bold colors and styles for those more experimental and daring than I! Will get there shortly...

Garment District 813: Tampa, Florida
+
On Saturday, May 1st, I had the pleasure of attending the Garment District 813 in Tampa, featuring lines from Ben Chmura and Raven Reda. The show was set in a rundown factory which had an industrial appeal, rust included. The designers added their own charm with the runway in the center of the factory along the concrete floor, and candles placed throughout the venue for a soothing tone. Music by DJ Curse Mackey, played a variety of remixed indie music with enough Yeah Yeah Yeahs to go around. Delish hors d’oeuvres catered by 717 South, and drinks provided by Red Bull and Starbucks, were the Pièce de résistance.
The fashion show was opened by Ben Chmura’s Lamia's Wrath Resort 2010 collection, featuring jewelry by Vestige and handbags by Tracy Zych. Let’s just says that every look was fabulous- each garment was beautifully done with geometric elements. The line featured accents that attracted the eyes toward the model’s back; whether it was just a slit, or the use clothing fusion, the back was always the focal point.
Throughout Chmura’s line there were fluorescent colors, angled back pockets and bronze painted shoes, the perfect way to make use of the Florida heat. My favorite look featured a beautiful pair of textured trousers, with a pale geometric pattern, which was paired with an off-white low cut blouse (that was to die for) paired off motif of bronze shoes and tights. The designer himself, who was a contestant on Lifetime’s Project Runway Season 7, looked great as well sporting a cardigan with a striped back. Overall, Chmura has created a line that was absolutely enjoyable to watch coming down the runway.
After a brief intermission, Raven Reda’s Coup d'Etat line was showcased, also featuring Vestige jewelry, and Widow=Killer accessories. To describe the line, edgy would be an understatement. In no such way, have I ever seen such creativity in the use of safety pins and zippers; as hems and for attaching fabrics together. Mesh and fishnets were quite prominent and were a great addition to every outfit. My favorite being in the one look where the mesh served as a cover-up and gathered in the back. And may I add, that the hair and makeup was phenom: the makeup was bold and the hair was either teased or was braided and wrapped around the model’s head- kudos to the Glamsquad.
Out of the entire collection, I must really commend Reda on the innovative leggings which incorporated pockets and zippers allotting the garment to double as either leggings or pants; looks great and is totally comfortable!
All in all, the Garment District 813 Fashion Show was a success with fab innovative designs, a wonderful atmosphere and good company. Best of all, it served as a stepping stone to bring the fashion-forward to Tampa. I cannot wait to see the looks from the two designers transform to the streets. Chmura and Reda are simply fab people with the creativity and talent to make their hard work noteworthy.

The New-Look Blazer
+
Every girl I know loves a great structured blazer. Cropped or boyfriend style, sleeves rolled up just so or simply left alone, blazers go well with many an outfit and manage to polish off that perfect look.
Now that the temperature is heating up, why not take a break from the traditional black, navy, and grey? Try the new look blazer: crisp white.
For the rocker in all of us, this Plastic Island blazer has me hooked. The silver studded collar and asymmetrical zip is both edgy and playful. Worn casual or for a night out, this jacket is definitely a statement piece that can punch up your springtime look. Mix this piece with another from all the softer hues that are out this season. Perhaps wear this blazer over a flouncy peach party dress or keep it Parisian chic worn over your favorite little black dress.
When it comes to trying on your own spring/summer blazer, think soft and lighter materials like cotton, linen, and even rayon. These have a breathability factor that you'll appreciate on a summer stroll or dining al fresco.
Delicate feminine details hit just the right note with the Free People Cascade Ruffle Blazer. The shawl lapel has a touch of lace that peek-a-boos along the collared edges. The back tiers of relaxed ruffles are darling; just enough girly elements in its structure to remain soft and whimsical without veering off into Little Bo Beep land. Throw it over a sundress or even a tank with denim shorts. This blazer is one to relax in.
Style Tip: stash a Tide to Go stick in your purse and have a great dry cleaners on speed dial. Both will help keep your whites bright and stain free.

Alexander Charriol "Human Flow" Opening Night with KiptonART and Whitewall Magazine
+
Thursday, April 22nd: Artist Alexander Charriol captivated guests with twenty new paintings at the opening of his show, Human Flow. In collaboration with KiptonART and Whitewall Magazine, the evening celebrated his new body of work focusing on the mystery behind the human touch. Each painting tells the story of an overpowering energy that feeds our desire to connect to each other while exploring the feeling of loneliness, our instinct for survival and the inevitability of death which all unite us towards an ultimate goal, LIFE.
Inspired by the relationships within crowds, Charriol was fascinated at how people from various backgrounds come together for a single purpose. The inspiration suited the evening perfectly as five hundred diverse members of the New York art scene, nightlife crowd and social set gathered in the space.
F
ellow artists Andrea Tese and David Foote marveled at the professional lightening, agreeing that the 5,000 square foot space, located in Gramercy, could match the caliber of any New York Chelsea gallery.
Amid the elaborate furnishings provided by Maria Gabriela Brito Lifestyling, music transcended through the art, as Charriol was greatly influenced by Jazz and the Blues seen amongst works such as "Blues Dancers" and "Morning Curves." Many of the artworks' figurative shapes take on instrumental forms of musical horns like the trumpet. Complimenting the musical theme, at random intervals during the evening, the Stumblebums Brass Band marched through the crowds blaring their tuba and drum while singing funky tunes.
SEEN: Grammy winner and violinist extraordinaire Joshua Bell, Kelly Bensimon, film producer Andrew Lauren with candy maven sister Dylan Lauren, chef Todd English, socialite Byrdie Bell, designer Nicole Hanley Mellon, glam financial analyst Lauren Remington Platt, Voguette Serena Nikkhah, Annie Churchill Albert, Ian Stanley, designer Maggie Norris, Marielle Safra, Marlborough Gallery's Melyora Kramer, Eileen Guggenheim, Elisabeth Saint-Amand, Anastasia Rogers, Kipton Cronkite, David Wassong, Susan Shin, Kimberly Guilfoyle, Anisha Ahooja, Vanessa Noel, Paige Hardy, Sam Hamadeh and Tatiana and Campion Platt,
Marisa Brown, Shirin Kooros, Cena Hackler Jackson, Katherine Cohen, Korinne and Nicole Korvos, designer Amy Smilovic, Director of Public Relations Liz Walker, and Coralie Charriol styled in Tibi.
The exhibition will run through May 15th at 4 East 27th Street (between 5th and Madison) by appointment only.

Ports 1961 - Craeft: Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week
+
Thursday, February 11th: The Promenade was packed and lined with notable fashion connoisseurs, including Lynn Yaeger, down the middle to view the Ports 1961 Fall 2010 collection: Craeft.
The show began with a moment of silence for designer Alexander McQueen followed by a dimming of the lights. With a plume of smoke, the models took the catwalk, without pausing in front of photogs. The run of show included 47 ensembles, "exploring the relationship between discovery and invention," using vintage construction techniques combined with innovative textiles.
The result: a little bit Amelia Earhart, a little bit Flying Nun Sally Fields style, a tad Bob Mackie, and a pinch of futuristic industrial form.
The soothing color palette of Mulberry, Tobacco, Iris, Rosemary, Freesia, Chicory, Clover and Pepper was linked together with Sage and Ginger. However, it was the high-tech fabrics that highlighted the collection. By utilizing silk lame and metalized fibers woven into wools, a holographic shine was created which resembled molten liquid. Innovative textiles with aluminum, fused neoprene, heat sensitive laminates and bionic fabrics were used in contrast to canvases, tweeds, leathers, and velvet.
The Fall 2010 collection combined a Victorian silhouette with a futuristic-geometric lines, a nod to the past with a positive outlook towards the future.
