Are Classics Still Classy?
+
Fashion, believe it or not, is very vague. At first you think that it is just clothing, but no, it is the culmination of creativity and craft. It is a known fact that classics are supposed to stay classy, and with changing times fashion lines adapt months before the rest of the world, well of course- they are the trendsetters. Lines such as Chanel, are broadening their horizons. It not just a label, but very much a brand, and going where no brand has gone before.
Established in 1910, this line has become known by everyone and Karl Lagerfeld has made his impact by bringing Chanel to the top of the House of the kingdom. The famous brand is no longer focused on just clothing; now the world renown company has gone onto producing beauty products, sports gear, eye-wear, guitars, fishing poles, even bikes! Truly Chanel was a pioneer line from the beginning and continues to be on the forefront what will be next. However, is it questionable whether Chanel should be outside the boundaries of couture fashion? With so many products, does it seems that just putting a logo on any product gives the right to charge such a large bill?
On another note, and a lighter price, we all know about Zac Posen’s beautiful and affordable line for Target. It is a great line and the designs are worthwhile; full of mod dresses and bright colors. I am not much of a Target dresser, but after seeing Posen’s line, I have been convinced to buy one of his pieces! These are not just some of Target plain-Jane outfits with just one or two wearable pieces, Posen's is one of the seldom lines that has it-ness.
Another fashion designer who has fallen into the mainstream retail industry is Max Azria, his designs are now being worn by tweens all around. This move could possibly be because of his co-designer, the controversial Miley Cyrus, who helped incorporated some British style and zippers to make money off the over obsessed kids. I must admit, I got some sick pleasure seeing some of the clothing on the clearance rack.
Perhaps I am old-fashioned, but I believe that designers shouldn't expand their company to such degrees. It's a known fact that classics are meant to stay classy. Now, with such talented designers such as Zac Posen, I don't believe that his design standards were severely lowered in his Target line, but the quality has definitely been compromised.
On the other hand, I can be easily called a hypocrite since I do not believe that clothing should be overpriced just because of the label... but then again, no one ever accused me of being a label-whore. Buying a shirt with a designer logo printed on the front isn't fashion, a well constructed shirt with a creative design and cut, and a shirt that gives you confidence is bespoke... and that is fashion.
