So Long Bryant Park… Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in Review Fall 2010
+
The fine farewell to a central locale boasted new trends for Fall 2010 and a consistent theme of a hopeful look to the future.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for Fall 2010 sponsored 81 official fashion shows over the course of 8 days, 12 being off-site. This does not include the numerous super-ingenious independent designer shows that concurrently take place. Though collectively, one thing is for sure: Fashion is back and style is the new black.
Now, as New Yorkers, we are somewhat on the cutting-edge of the Fashion World, therefore some of the trends this season we've seen before, yet, some we have not.
Trends for Fall: Military, 1920-30's aviator pants and bomber jackets, visible layering, structured shoulders (a slimmer version of the 80's shoulder pad), jeweled embellishments, belting to expose layers, a-symmetry, intricate back details, and ruffle details.
Textiles: Unique blended fabrics, lace, mesh, chunky knits, shimmery metallics, hounds-tooth (my fave), plaid, color textured stockings, shimmery stockings, and patch-working chunky materials with delicate fabrics.
Accessories: Fitted thigh-high boots and stockings (often layered), leather bomber caps, chunky knit scarves, geometric gold or silver rings, bracelets and necklaces, and while most designers paired their collection with various length leather gloves, I became partial to the tight forearm cuff in metallics and army printed mesh.
Conclusion: So long Bryant Park... so long fashion drought... so long decade with no name... Bienvenue MBFW at Lincoln Center...

J. Mendel: Fall 2010 Presentation
+Thursday, February 18th: J. Mendel Fall 2010 Presentation in the Salon at Bryant Park.
Layering, unique blending of fabrics, and draping were consistent elements throughout all of the shows during this season's Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. These were also key to the J. Mendel Fall 2010 Collection. However, what separates The House of J. Mendel from other designers, is the way in which they utilize those techniques with luxurious fabrics and furs to emphasis of the female form by giving definition and shape to the body.
Gilles Mendel has reinterpreted elements of nature intertwined within a downtown scene by the use of couture fabrics such as; silk faille, mousseline, jacquard, satin, which are paired with metallic tweeds, fur and hints of leather to create a vibrant downtown-chic look. "It always starts with color and texture," explains Mendel of his inspiration for the collection. "The images from Ryan McGinley's Moonmilk series were so beautiful and organic."
Of course, the evening gowns were breathtaking. Deep reds, Prussian blues and volcanic greens seemed to melt onto the models, elongating the feminine form.
Despite the thick crowd of celebrities, photographers, journalists and buyers, the J. Mendel Fall 2010 Collection was viewed the only way one should experience the artistry and sophistication that is the House of J. Mendel: Presented.
Toni Francesc: Backstage and Runway - Fall 2010
+
Tuesday, February 16th: Toni Francesc - Artificial Life - Fall 2010 Backstage and Runway Show in the Salon at Bryant Park.
From the make-up to working closely with his house photographer, Keith Lew, to the final presentation on the runway, Toni Francesc knows exactly what he wants. Scurrying back and forth from make-up/hair to wardrobe with a smile, Francesc makes sure every detail is executed to a T that is his vision.
For the Fall 2010 collection, Artificial Life, Francesc takes on the familiar motif of Man vs. Machine, "offering a critical perspective of the future without overlooking the roots of the past and the world of handcrafted creation." However, his big question is, how does one discover ones' real self amongst a cold and technological world?
The collection exemplifies industrial elements both in it's rust metal color story and angular shapes. In it's entirety, the run of show seemed to depict Man's failing to find the Self within a technologically advanced society. A bit of a downer, but Francesc's ideology is quite evident and perhaps lends itself to seek hope and change for the future.

Thuy: Fall 2010
+
Tuesday, February 16th: Thuy Fall 2010 Runway Show in the Salon at Bryant Park.
For the Thuy Fall 2010 collection, chunky embellishments and opulent fabrics reflected the interesting palette of golds and vibrant jewel tones of deep amethyst, ruby reds, and dark peridot. The details of each of the 29 looks, played within the textiles to create a "spirit of controlled Gothic romanticism."
The styling, by GK Reid, included a different twist to puckering, belting, and wrapping, lending a new approach to ready-to-wear.

Pamella Roland: Fall 2010
+
Tuesday, February 16th: Pamella Roland Fall 2010 runway show in the Salon at Bryant Park.
With the lovely actress Alfre Woodard, wearing Pamela Roland of course, to my left and photographer Nigel Barker to my right, I was front and center to witness the stunning classic Venetian glamour of the Fall 2010 collection by Pamella Roland.
Rich jewel tones, metallics and textured blacks paired with sleek designs emphasised Roland's keen eye for the perfect silhouette. The collection embodies the classic romantic beauty and mysterious nature of the city [Venice] while integrating a modern edge and structured dimension.
From the shift dresses, to elegant suits, to the jaw-dropping gowns- the collection speaks to the "confidence and empowerment of today's woman."
Crystals, pleats, satin piping, chiffon millefiori embroidery, pickstiched seams, jewel encrusted legwarmers, organza, beaded armbands, mink and fox cuffs, deco beaded waist panel, and black beaded tulle overlay- are just a few examples of Roland's keen attention to extraordinary detail which enhance the lines and intricate construction.
The finale Ivory Silk Faille Wedding Gown with floral applique train exuded an exhilarated gasp from the entire auditorium. With grace... and a sigh of relief with a smile, the model took a moment to turn the train and continue her glide back down the catwalk.
The show closed with Roland pulling her family from the crowd to complete her walk down the runway. It was then that Ms. Woodard turned to me and said, "I love her even more now!"

Vassilios Kostetsos: Athens - Fall 2010
+
Sunday, February 14th: Vassilios Kostetsos - Athens. Fall 2010 collection at Bryant Park.
"My new collection for Autumn/Winter 2010 is inspired by the verses of the ancient Greek dramatist Sophocles in his 442 BC dram, Antigone." -Vassilios Kostetsos.
If Antigone and Haemon channeled Barbarella and Mark Hand, then took a trip from planet SoGo, made a pit stop at an 80's prom, took a spin through Studio 54, then landed in The Salon at Bryant Park, you'd be witness to Kostetsos' AMAZING Athens runway show.
The show opened with a woman's orgasmic cries followed by uber-tall female and male models taking the runway by storm.
This collection holds no barriers. Its all about energy- immense passion and strength, love and lust. Kostetsos utilizes colors, textiles, and lines to symbolize the tragedy of Antigone.
Metallic Red=love and passion. Shiny Blacks=Polynices' death. Bronze=battle weapons. Leather Details=harshness and dynasim of a battle.
Accessories of forearm cuffs, put this year's stellar glove trend to shame
and seal the line's definition of lust, love, and strength. Bright snake-skins of bronze, cream, coral, and black... are simply gorgeous and compliment the bold shoulders and modern day epaulettes. Kostetsos also implements skin color mesh and soft printed mesh... like tattoos of the heart.
Every element of each look is so rich and and carefully constructed, I am absolutely beside myself.
Conclusion: The Fashion World better watch out. Learn how to spell his name, 'cause a new man just landed on this planet and he's going to take over the kingdom. V-A-S-S-I-L-I-O-S K-O-S-T-E-T-S-O-S
Antigone Synopsis: Eteocles and Polyneices, two brothers leading opposite sides in Thebes' civil war, died fighting each other for the throne. Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, has declared that Eteocles will be honored and Polyneices disgraced. The rebel brother's body will not be sanctified by holy rites, and will lie unburied on the battlefield. Antigone, Polyneices' sister, wants to bury Polyneices' body, in defiance of Creon's edict. Creon decides to bury Antigone alive in a cave.
Haemon, Creon's son and Antigone's fiancé, initially seems willing to join Creon, but when Haemon gently tries to persuade his father to spare Antigone, the discussion deteriorates and Haemon leaves, vowing never to see Creon again.
Teiresias, the blind prophet, warns Creon that the gods will side with Antigone. and that because of Creon's mistakes, he will lose five children for the crimes of leaving Polyneices unburied and putting Antigone into the earth.
A Messenger reports that Haemon and Antigone have both taken their own lives.
The Chorus closes by saying that although the gods punish the proud, punishment brings wisdom.
Kostetsos surmises, "Love unconquered in the battle."
