SBS Discoveries: YellowMan Breaks Social Barriers with Wearable Skin
+
There is nothing better then making an incredible discovery at your last stop of the evening. After party hopping through three Art Basel Miami Beach Opening Night Receptions, I somehow ended up at stumbling into a gallery in the Wynwood Arts District, sometime in the wee hours of the evening.
I could faintly hear some serious dance beats and laughter going on in the courtyard as I made my way into a large open area with tattoo style art symmetrically displayed on the white walls. I was drawn towards the back and instinctively handed my business card to a man wearing a stellar long sleeve t-shirt. I have no idea why I did that, but as it turns out, I am super glad I did.
Andreas Engel is the man behind YellowMan founder, Peter Mui. In the early 90’s, Mui embarked on an ambitious quest to build a library of original artwork by the world’s most esteemed tattoo artists, for the purpose of creating a distinctive line of fine art tattoo clothing.” This is the first time Mui’s private collection has ever been showcased to the public.
Engel escorted me over to a set of chairs to sit and chat. He began with the amazing life of Mui who grew up in Oklahoma. Though Mui is full Chinese decent, his parents urged him to Americanize. Mui longed to discover his Chinese ancestry and heritage while still immersing in his new American life. He refused to be boxed or categorized.
Mui decided to snub the derogatory label Yellow, and “instead declares it a badge of integrity and pride for those who dare to be different.” Hence his label, YellowMan.
With the philosophy, “Your skin is the largest organ of your body. What you are born with is what you've got for the rest of your life. It defines who you are. And no matter what color it is, it's beautiful.” Mui set out to celebrate his heritage, American culture, and diversity, by creating a literal translation for his interpretation of skin. Mui conceptualized YellowMan “under that premise that skin color should never be a barrier against social status.”
Mui sought out different tattoo artists and translated their work into wearable garments. He wanted to retain the masterpieces as they were intended and bring in the element of being comfortable in one’s skin. YellowMan carefully engineered technical fabrics called MadKool. This breathable, light and soft fabric captures “the art with vivid clarity, while also providing powerful wicking benefits found in top athletic-wear brands.” The result- groundbreaking wearable works of art.
FYI: Mui's ancestors ran fabric mills in China.
Styles include: Japanese Irezumi, Maori Tribal, American Traditional, New School, Biomechanical, and even rare work from a remote Buddhist monk in Thailand.
YellowMan projects Peter Mui's vision of individuality and pride, where cultural, ethnic, and social barriers do not exist.

Harley-Davidson: 2010 Model Launch Party
+An eclectic crowd gathered at The Ainsworth October 8th, to get a look at the 2010 Harley-Davidson models, try on some fresh leather duds, and meet a few of the Motor Company staff.
The 6,000 square foot bar/restaurant with rustic wood walls avec chic chandelier lighting, has plenty of space to showcase several of the new models. The Screamin' Eagle Street Glide FLHXSE in spiced rum was poised on the Step & Repeat, a super hot accessory to those gracing the Orange Carpet.
My fave: A 2010 Sportster, Nightster, in brilliant silver denim and black denim.
In addition to plenty of bevs served by some gorgeous hosts, two tattoo tables were set up, the real deal by Dare Devil Tattoo and Fun City Tattoo, and airbrush tatts. Obviously, there was fun to be had at this launch party.
SEEN: Constantine Maroulis, Devorah Rose, Stephanie Newhouse, Kinga Drzeszlo, Lauren Rae Levy, Sky Nellor, Paul Johnson Caledron, and Celina Carvajal.
Be sure to check out the 2010 models or take a test spin with my boys at Liberty Harley-Davidson/BUELL in Rahway or at Highroads Harley-Davidson/BUELL in Highland Park.
